route map - 26 Kb

The Roman Heritage Way provides the walker with the following three principal options.
  1. Segedunum to Trimontium (Newcastle upon Tyne to Melrose) This starts at Wallsend on the eastern side of Newcastle upon Tyne and follows the line of Hadrian's Roman defence wall to the fort at Housesteads. The Way then tracks north close to the line of Dere Street then joining this Roman Military Road at Chew Green before following it almost all the way to the village of St Boswells before finally going by the side of the Tweed River to the site of the Trimontium Fort before the final mile to the Border town of Melrose. 99 miles 158 Km
  2. Maia Fort to Trimontium (Bowness on Solway to Melrose) Starting from the western end of Hadrian's Wall the Way follows the line and remains of the Wall past Birdoswald and other forts to a point just short of Housesteads. The Way then follows the same common route to Melrose. 102 miles 163 Km
  3. Segedunum to Maia Fort (Newcastle to Bowness on Solway) Travel the complete length of Hadrian's Wall from the large fort on the banks of the Tyne to the smaller fort on the Solway Firth. This walk takes in a range of Roman Forts and associated museum/exhibitions reaching its highest point at Windshields Crags at 345 metres. 84 miles 135 Km
Each of the options can be equally as well walked in the reverse direction.

The complete walk is waymarked by using a range of signposting symbols. This reflects the route's origin having being developed from sections of the following public paths.

  • Hadrian's Wall Path
  • Pennine Way
  • Dere Street
  • St Cuthbert's Way
