ROMAN HERITAGE WAY |
Bellingham - Byrness |
This section of the Way is 15 miles (24 Km) over open moorland and
hill followed by walking through sections of the Kielder Forest.
Starting from an altitude of 110 mtrs this section rises to 365 mtrs
at Brownrigg Head and ends at 230 mtrs.
Depart Bellingham on the West Woodburn road climbing up past the Youth Hostel. At a sharp right hand bend leave the public road and head for Blakelaw Farm. The Way passes through the steedings then starts to curve right and north in direction.
From above Blakelaw Farm there are panoramic views down over Bellingham
and to the right its golf course. To the south it is possible to see
beyond Ealingham Rigg to the hills crossed the previous day and to some
of the distance hills of Hadrian's Wall.
Just below Highstead Hill and on the boundary line of the
Northumberland National Park there is a "Y" junction with two options
of path. We recommend the right hand and higher route passing closer
to the Callerhues Crags and reaching Hareshaw House by the easterly
route.
Shortly after this the way crosses the Otterburn to Bellingham road
then heading in an initial NE direction then NW to a high point at
Deer Play above Troughend Common. From here there are 360 degree views,
the ones to the east and north looking over the Roman Forts at
Habitanovm, Dargues and Brigantium.
The way continues in a NW direction crossing a single track road and continuing sometimes over marsh ground to Padon Hill and round the side of a monument. At this point a new vista opens up with the eastern corner of Kielder Forest ahead. There follows a steep descent by an equally steep ascent by the side of the forest, this being hard and often very wet under foot.
For some time the walk remains on the outside edge of the forestry, then for a short distance there are tree all around before reaching the first made up track in the forest. This is the track from Gibshiel to Blakehopeburnhaugh. Turn right and follow this track NNW. From time to time the walk will leave the track, but never for too long before re-joining.
This forest track is more open than many and the views to the north and to the hills behind Byrness are attractive. The descent is towards the A 68 road, and as the way progresses the route runs parallel with Dere Street, the Roman Road, which is on the eastern side of the road at this time. Near to the River Rede the track opens out to a nice recreational area and picnic spot and immediately across the bridge the way turns left.
The final 2 kilometres are along the banks of the River Rede, starting on the east bank then transferring to the west along the edge of Redesdale Forest. Through the forest the Small church at Byrness can be seen standing on a mound above the River. A last crossing of the Rede by way of a pedestrian path bring this section of the walk to an end at the church gate and adjacent to the Byrness Hotel. This is a small community with the Youth Hostel, school and majority of housing some few hundred metres further north along the A 68.
