99 Miles - 158 Km, this is marginally shorter to the other
principal option. It is likely to demand 6 or 7 days to complete.
Starting beside the industrial shores of the Tyne Estuary the Way
takes you right through the vibrant centre of Newcastle before heading
west along the line of the Tyne River. Before the first days walking is
completed the Way has started to climb out of the Tyne Valley and into
attractive rural settings. The Way now follows the line of Hadrian's
Wall, sometimes only visible in the form of its ditches,or vallum, but
increasingly in Wall remains and Roman Forts.
The Way then turns north and the landscape changes more dramatically with
many more hill ranges to cross. The line of the walk is close to that
of Dere Street and at times directly follows its line, this including a
long descent into the Teviot and Tweed valleys.
The second half of the route is much more remote, with wide open
countryside, and few opportunities for stopping of at a country pub or
shop.
This is a walk that is exhilerating but you need to be well prepared.
Useful tips are to be found in the walker's data
section.
