Bowness on Solway - Melrose
|
102 Miles - 163 Km, this is likely to demand 6 or 7 days to
complete.
Starting with the unique Solway Firth before rising shortly after
Carlisle to some of the best preserved sections of Hadrian's Wall.
Before heading north there are several miles of the route along the
tops of the Crags, this is intriguing, attractive but also demanding
with frequent steep descents and ascents. One has to marvel at the
engineering skills of the Romans as they set up this northern
defensive line.
The Way then turns north and the landscape changes more dramatically with
many more hill ranges to cross. The line of the walk is close to that
of Dere Street and at times directly follows its line, this including a
long descent into the Teviot and Tweed valleys.
The second half of the route is much more remote, with wide open
countryside, and few opportunities for stopping of at a country pub or
shop.
This is a walk that is exhilerating but you need to be well prepared.
Useful tips are to be found in the walker's data
section.
The route elevation is represented by the outline below. This
